Geoheroes at Kivik

Project Miniambassadorer för Geokulturarvet, or "Geohälte", is an outdoor educational project for children run by Kiviks Museum in collaboration withGeoForum Scania. Local natural resources have historically shaped all social development and cultural heritage, and we want to make visible to school children of middle school age what the connection between geological conditions and cultural heritage looks like. By understanding historical connections, the next generation can contribute to wise, sustainable decisions being made about how the earth's resources are best used now and in the future.

In the project, the classroom is moved out into nature. Experiencing nature and cultural heritage and building one's own relationship with the landscape provides understanding and insightful knowledge of the human role in caring for and preserving nature and its values for the future.

In July 2020, a first pilot round was carried out, where during the Water Weekend at Kivik we had a themed afternoon for tourist children at Kivik. In the plantations on Karakås at Kiviks Musteri, a first group of children got to try out the learning concept and understand more about sustainable resources, geological timelines and local conditions for natural resources.

In September 2020, the big project was carried out in collaboration with the Pirate School's after-school children, who in the same way out on Karakås got to learn more about the geological timeline, the conditions of the local natural resources based on hundreds of millions of years of development, sustainable resource use, water and local history with the fruit in center. The children participated in the training and afterwards had to complete a knowledge test to receive diplomas and shirts as "Geohältar". All the children and the leisure staff were very happy with the day.

In June 2021, the project and the collaboration with GeoForum continued through a project support from Leader. Middle school-age students from the Pirate School in Kivik learned more about geology, sustainability and cultural heritage during a full day at the Alunbruket in Andrarum, where the Kiviks Museum told about the strong connection between the mill and Kivik during the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. The project was called Geokids and the aim is for the concept to be quality assured and become an outdoor educational method that can be spread to other places as well. Both school classes and adults can take part in the training, which can be adapted according to age and target group.

There is also an exchange with actors in Västergötland, through inspiration and collaboration with the Platåbergen Geopark and the work with mini ambassadors in the Vänerskärgården biosphere area with Kinnekulle and with the KASTiS project at the University of Skövde.

In an upcoming collaboration, we will lift and scale up the method further and let children teach new children about the project, which will thus become part of itChildren's Culture Workshop.

The project was financed in 2020 by the Kiviks Museum, GeoForum Skåne and the Riksantikvarieämbetet and in 2021 by the Kiviks Museum, GeoForum Skåne and Leader Skåne Sydost.
